The Department has been engaged in teaching English since the 1980s. It is committed to excelling in its endeavors for teaching English language skills, English linguistics and English literature. The faculty members exert great efforts to educate, inspire and support their students to elevate their standing and academic pursuits. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. It was authorized to offer a BA degree in English Language and Literature, an MA in Applied Linguistics and an MA in English Literature. Our Faculty members have degrees and research specialization in linguistics and Language-related areas: Syntax, Semantics, Phonology, Phonetics, Second Language Acquisition, Psycholinguistics, Translation, Reading and Writing. Some faculty members have distinguished expertise and research in literature and different genres including: Drama, English and British Literature, Literary Criticism, Comparative Literature and Poetry.

Awards
The Deanship of Academic Research at Mutah University has awarded a grant of $110,000 to Dr. Rania Al-Agarbeh to establish an Experimental Linguistics Lab at the Department of English Language and Literature.
The Experimental Linguistics Lab is being established as a research lab at the Department directed by Dr. Rania Al-Agarbeh in her endeavors to interweave theoretical and empirical work. The lab is devoted to focus on the study of natural language syntax and its interface to semantics, using data obtained through controlled experimentation, primarily, Acceptability Judgment, Eye tracking, and Self-Paced Reading Tasks to explore issues of interest. The lab is being designed to offer work space for the design, preparation, running and analysis of experiments. The main goal of establishing the lab is to bring together faculty and graduate students to work empirical research using aforementioned formal, experimental techniques. Current research areas include the processing and acceptability of Gap and Resumption in Arabic Interrogatives and Relative Clauses.
